Overview

Fritz Scholder inspired generations of Native American artists including his students at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA.) As an instructor at IAIA from 1964-1969 he taught advanced painting and contemporary art history. Scholder was trained at mainstream art institutions as Sacramento State University and University of Arizona. He combined pop art and abstract expression and was known for his controversial depictions of “Real Indians”. He started his New Mexico painting series in 1964, when he moved to Santa Fe. The works depict abstract New Mexico landscapes and seem to reflect rock formations and mesas of New Mexico in the Color Field style.
