Overview

Carl Tubby drew upon traditional geometric design found in Plains Indian beadwork, quillwork, and hide painting patterns for his paintings. Characteristic for his style, he zoomed in on these geometrical designs and spread the composition out on two canvases. Tubby’s crisp edges and flat application of pure colors without visible brushstrokes resemble Hard-edge paintings and reflect his interest in combining customary and modern aspects of Native American art. Tubby was part of the Institute of American Indian Arts’ international traveling exhibition North American Indian Arts on the views in the galleries of Edinburgh Scotland in Berlin, Germany, in 1966/67.
