Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, South Dakota, Don Montileaux graduated from Rapid City High School in 1966 and enrolled into the Institute of American Indian Arts until 1969. After working in the BIA Mobile Art Van in the early 1970s and teaching traditional Plains Indian art forms in reservation schools, Montileaux developed the iconic style he is known for today: abstracted ledger art. His flat, two-dimensional paintings often depict warriors and horses flying across the plains in their finery. Some of them also comment on current political and social issues. Early works such as Four Legs of Life are bold, abstract paintings using brilliant colors and geometric compositions inspired by Plains Indian beadwork and parfleche designs.
