Kevin Red Star Running Rabbit (Crow | 1943 - present)

Kevin Red Star was born on the Crow Indian Reservation in Lodge Grass, Montana. Brought up in a creative family, Kevin developed early artistic capability. He was chosen to be in the first group of students at the Institute of American Indian Arts, where he studied from 1962 to 1964. He then attended the San Francisco Art Institute and later, Montana State University. At IAIA he was encouraged to mine his own culture and experiment with modern art styles. In 1971, the Museum of the Plains Indian in Browning, Montana, offered him his first one-man exhibition. Soon after, he returned to IAIA as the Institute’s first artist-in-residence. His style changed during the 1970s, when he began his iconic portraits of historic Crow tribal members with exaggerated features, colorful clothing, and dark backgrounds, increasingly abandoning contemporary American art issues to ground his work in his cultural history, beliefs, and values. Red Star’s paintings are included in major private and museum collections, internationally.
