Artists Fritz Scholder, Neil Parsons, and Earl Eder created paintings partly inspired by Color Field Painting, a style characterized by large fields of color. Unlike Abstract Expressionist painters such as Mark Rothko or Barnett Newman, works by Scholder, Parsons and Eder often reference Native American concepts, designs or symbolic aspects of the New Mexico Landscape. Many Native artists from this time period embraced art influences from modern art movements because the exploration of these art styles liberated them from stereotypical expectations regarding Native American art.
